Body image is the way someone identifies their body and how they think others identify their body. This is affected by family, friends, social pressure and social media. Low self esteem during adolescence can lead to eating disorders, early sexual activity, substance use and suicidal thoughts. Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. There are two different types of body image positive and negative. Positive body image is when someone understand their sense of self-worth does not depend on their appearance. Having a positive body image includes accepting and appreciating the whole of one's body, including how it looks and what it can do. Where as negative body image is being overly focused on comparing your size, shape, or appearance to unrealistic ideals. Females: Over 30% of females are personally concerned about their body image. Males: 15.4% saying they are concern but fair more concerned with Physical health.
There are four aspects to body image they are:
The way you see yourself (Perceptual)
The way you feel about the way you look (Affective)
The thoughts and beliefs you feel about your body (Cognitive)
The things you do in relation to the way you look (Behavioural)
